One of Amazon's biggest action movies that was released earlier this year has returned to prove that its success was no fluke. Premiering back in January, the film stars Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa as two estranged brothers who reconnect to solve the mystery behind their father's death. Upon its debut, the action-comedy hybrid immediately became one of the most popular movies on streaming, and now, six months later, it's wreaking havoc yet again on Prime Video.
Jason Momoa & Dave Bautista Bring the Laughs in Amazon's Hit Action Movie
Directed by Ángel Manuel Soto (Blue Beetle) and written by Jonathan Tropper (Star Wars: Starfighter), The Wrecking Crew stars Momoa as Jonny Hale, a suspended Oklahoma police detective, and Bautista as James Hale, a U.S. Navy SEAL. After not speaking for years, the estranged duo are forced back together when their father, a private investigator, was killed in a hit-and-run accident in Hawaii.
Of course, it was no ordinary accident, and before long, the Hale brothers find themselves caught up in a conspiracy involving the Yakuza, corrupt officials, and a powerful developer trying to seize protected land so he can build a casino. Putting their differences aside, Jonny and James do right by their father by battling waves of enemies before bringing those responsible for his death to justice.
Also starring Claes Bang, Temuera Morrison, Morena Baccarin, Stephen Root, Jacob Batalon, and Frankie Adams, The Wrecking Crew clocks in at 122 minutes, and though that might seem long for an action-comedy movie, it's filled with enough gun fights, hand-to-hand combat, car chases, and explosions to make the time fly by.
When it's over, you'll undoubtedly be craving more, as the first on-screen collaboration between Bautista and Momoa was definitely worth the wait. Reminiscent of 80s and 90s buddy cop movies, their comedic banter throughout the movie helped propel it to success a few months ago, and is for sure one of the reasons why it's seeing a resurgence on streaming.
'The Wrecking Crew' Is Officially One of the Biggest Action Movies on Streaming
Hitting Prime Video on Jan. 28, The Wrecking Crew was an immediate smash for Amazon MGM Studios, as the action film shot up to #1 on the worldwide charts, making it a true global smash. It held the top spot for a while before eventually being dethroned, and in the months since, it's fallen off the charts in favor of newer movies like Project Hail Mary, The Sheep Detectives, and Jack Ryan: Ghost War.
That being said, The Wrecking Crew saw a massive resurgence on Prime Video last week, as between July 6–12, the hit action film shot up to #9 on the list of Top 10 Prime Original films (English & non-English) worldwide. Other movies making the list were two Jason Statham action thrillers, The Beekeeper and A Working Man, as well as the Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson sci-fi thriller, Mercy, which is also enjoying newfound success on streaming. See below for a complete list of the Top 10 for the reporting period.
Next up for Bautista is Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, in which he'll voice the role of Tagah. Look for that one to open July 25. As for Momoa? He'll appear next in Street Fighter and Dune: Part Three, both of which hit theaters later this year.
