Portland cyclists set a new world record Sunday morning, drawing 1,060 electric-bike riders to a downtown loop that more than doubled the previous mark.
The City of Portland Bureau of Transportation was awarded the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title for the largest electric bicycle ride on July 19, 2026, taking the crown from Seattle, which previously held the record with 405 e-bikes.

PBOT Director Millicent Williams accepted the honor on stage at Gov. Tom McCall Waterfront Park, surrounded by leaders from Portland’s bike community. Susana Reyes, an official adjudicator with GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS, was on hand for the announcement.
The ride began at Salmon Street Springs Fountain, where participants filled the Better Naito bikeway north toward the Burnside Bridge before the official start. The 2-mile loop crossed the Hawthorne and Tilikum bridges as riders attempted to break the record while also celebrating 10 years of BIKETOWN bike-share in Portland.
PBOT said BIKETOWN has logged 3.9 million rides since its inception and has become a key transportation option for getting around the city. In PBOT’s 2025 Bike Count, e-bikes made up 24% of bike trips, and PBOT reported seeing more women using e-bikes than men.
Participants were encouraged to stay downtown after the record attempt and continue celebrating at Portland’s Pride Parade and Festival. PBOT said BIKETOWN title sponsor Nike provided complimentary entry to the Portland Pride Festival for the first 1,000 participants.
BIKETOWN is free to ride citywide on Sunday, July 19, with code 10YRBKTN, valid only July 19 from 12 a.m. to 11:59 p.m.
