The Pokemon Trading Card Game is celebrating Pokemon's 30th anniversary in a big way. The first few cards and all of the products have been revealed, cementing it as one of the most hyped expansions in years, probably since Pokemon's 25th anniversary.
It means, however, that scalpers, who have been plaguing the hobby for a while now, are licking their lips. Almost every product released over the last two years has been a nightmare to purchase because of their underhanded tactics, and this set is going to be so much worse. While stock is far more prevalent, as we first reported, with potentially two to three times as much available, that won't stop those trying to make a quick buck.
We saw it just last week as the first wave of products dropped, the Pokemon Center Exclusive Elite Trainer Box, and now we're seeing it again. Last night, The Pokemon Company dropped two more products, both of which are being sold on the secondary market at a far higher price than RRP.
Pokemon's Latest 30th Anniversary TCG Drop Has Already Hit The Secondary Market
Last night, Booster Bundles, one of the best cost-per-pack products, and Mini Tin Display Cases hit The Pokemon Center store. The Booster Bundles retail for $26.96 and contain six packs at $4.49 per pack. The Mini Tin Display Case contains ten Mini Tins, each with two packs, at an RRP of $99.99. You can bet they're selling for a lot more than that now, though.
Buyers could get a maximum of three Booster Bundles per order, which most tended to do for a total of $80.88, and that's how they're regularly listed on eBay. The cheapest three can be purchased on the reselling site for is $199.28, a healthy $120 profit. A single bundle will set you back $70, still a $45 profit.
The cheapest you can buy a Mini Tin display case is just as eye-opening. For a $100 purchase, scalpers are charging genuine collectors at least $250. For this reason, Nintendo said it is working with The Pokemon Company to "stop speculative buying."
This situation mimics the ones we saw with the Pokemon Center Exclusive Elite Trainer Box, which is selling for almost 7x RRP. I don't think this is the end of it, either...
