There are only a handful of stories that are generating any interest at this point in the offseason. Among these, those associated with LeBron James‘ free agency decision are by far the most exciting ones.
After James clearly expressed his intent to return for the 2026-27 season, albeit with another team, several franchises emerged as suitors for the 41-year-old. Needless to say, this list has dwindled over the last few weeks, with several falling out of contention due to a lack of appeal. However, from those that remain, the Golden State Warriors seem to be on the rise again.
Many speculated that the Warriors would be out of the running due to their relatively underwhelming roster. Still, during the Fanatics Fest in New York, former NBA player P.J. Tucker seemed convinced that Golden State would not only sign LeBron James but would also land Anthony Davis. He commented:
“I got him going to Golden State. Bron in Golden State is going to be tough… And AD about to get up out of Washington, and they’re going to get AD.”
The remaining panel, which featured members of the “Club 520 Podcast,” was largely against the move. Still, P.J. Tucker was convinced that LeBron James joining the Golden State Warriors would be the best move.
Realistically, it is difficult to perceive Tucker as a viable source of information regarding player movement at this stage. Given the reports that the Washington Wizards intend to keep Anthony Davis, it is harder to believe Tucker’s prediction.
Still, given the recent developments, there may be enough to suggest the Warriors remain in the running to land LeBron James, at least.
Do The Warriors Still Have A Chance Of Landing LeBron James?
For all intents and purposes, the Warriors’ initial chances were probably among the best of any team in the NBA. Barring LeBron James’ friendship with both Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, Golden State’s championship culture, James’ fit in the system, and the city’s location as a business hub were all promising factors that could have convinced James to sign with them.
However, there has always been one glaring issue: title contention.
The Golden State Warriors, while one of the most successful franchises in the modern era, are not currently geared to contend for a title.
Despite having players like Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, Kristaps Porzingis, and some promising young role players, the Western Conference’s competitive environment may be too much for them to cope with. Thus, when also factoring in the limited salary cap flexibility in making noteworthy signings and trades, the Warriors look a lot less appealing.
Still, Golden State hasn’t necessarily given up on pursuing James. Aside from the pitches made by Draymond Green and Stephen Curry, even Warriors rookie Yaxel Lendeborg attempted to recruit the 41-year-old superstar. While teams like the Philadelphia 76ers and the Miami Heat may have a better shot here, the opportunity to play with Curry is truly enticing.
As things stand, LeBron James is expected to make his announcement within the next few hours. On that note, the Warriors’ trump card remains how convenient it would be for James to travel from Los Angeles to the Bay Area to be with his family. Given that his daughter, Zhuri, has also been viewed as a vital factor in his decision, Golden State can remain optimistic about its chances.
