The Philadelphia Phillies are expected to be active before the Aug. 3 trade deadline. At 56-45, they comfortably hold a wild card spot, but are looking to chase down the 58-41 Atlanta Braves for the lead in the National League East.
While Philadelphia could use help at several spots, outfield is a glaring need. Brandon Marsh (.814) is the team's only outfielder with an OPS above .800 with at least 100 at-bats. Luckily for the Phillies, there are a handful of talented options expected to be available.
On Monday, The San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser reported that the Phillies had scouts in attendance during the San Francisco Giants matchup against the Kansas City Royals. Left fielder Heliot Ramos was identified as a player the team may have been watching.
"Ramos is a player that several teams see as a match," Slusser wrote. "The Phillies, in the market for a right-handed-hitting outfielder, had a scout at Monday night’s game."
Ramos is putting together an effective season with the Giants. He has appeared in 62 games, accumulating 33 runs scored, 66 hits, nine home runs and 30 RBIs in 239 at-bats. He is also slashing .276/.310/.469 for a .779 OPS.
While the Phillies already have Marsh in left field, Ramos is flexible. Since making his debut in 2022, he has also logged innings at center field (517.2) and right field (179.1). During his All-Star season in 2024, he actually logged 504.2 innings in center.
At 26 years old, the right-hander still has several years under team control. With three more full seasons of arbitration, he isn't set to hit free agency until 2030. That only increases his value to trade suitors.
With the trade deadline less than two weeks away, the Phillies will continue to evaluate ways to strengthen their roster. Ramos' offensive numbers and defensive flexibility make him an appealing option.
