People Are Sharing The Foods That Are Overhyped, And Yeah, I Agree Actually

"They taste kinda meh and add nothing to the dish. A good fruit is one you can eat on its own, and you never see anyone do that. They're healthy, but expensive."

As someone who's been on a health journey for three years, I can admit that I still have imposter syndrome, especially when it comes to food. Like, what's truly worth my coin, what's actually going to get me gains, and what's worth the hype.

You know what I mean, you don't have to be dialed in the gym world 24/7 to know that there seems to be a "food of the week" (nearly every week), and somehow it just never lives up to the hype. I'll name-drop mine — beets, in any form, in all forms — sorry, not sorry.

So, when I stumbled upon the r/nutrition thread asking precisely that, "What's a 'healthy' food that you think is totally overhyped?" I won't lie, the hater in me was all ears.

2."This might be so niche, but does anyone remember those puffed snap peas? They look like a vegetable, but their nutrition facts are about equal to those of potato chips. For that matter, any kind of 'vegetable' chip that I can get in the potato chip aisle of Kroger is probably a gimmick."

3."Kale. 😅 It's definitely healthy, but people treat it like it's some kind of superfood superhero. There are so many other greens that are just as good and taste better!"

4."An old and faded fad, but goji berries. Tart in a bad way. I read somewhere that they grow wild in China, and nobody eats them because they're so unpleasant tasting."

9."Chamomile tea. Its calming effects are mild to nonexistent. It tastes like cut grass."

10."Juicing culture. You're pulling out all the useful fiber and getting mostly the sugar. The fiber is very essential to helping you digest and absorb the nutrients."

11."Olive oil. Being from Asia, I simply do not understand the appeal of pouring it on stuff. I also don't like the taste. There are far better ways to add flavor to your food, for less fat, than to pour a green eyeball of oil on it."

12."Coconut water. Yeah, sure, it provides hydration and some electrolytes, but it's not that much better for you than water."

13."Avocados. They taste kinda meh and add nothing to the dish. A good fruit is one you can eat on its own, and you never see anyone do that. They're healthy, but expensive."

14."Sushi rolls. I just finished working as a diabetes health educator for a nonprofit health organization. I mostly worked with newly diagnosed folks with Type 2 diabetes. I cannot tell you how many ended up where they were with their diagnosis from eating so much white rice (some at every meal)."

16."Tofu. Tried it, but still can't get why people like it. Respect to those who enjoy, but it is not for me."

18."Granola (and granola bars): high in added sugar, refined starches, and hydrogenated vegetable oils, but a minuscule quantity of oats and nuts somehow gives it a health halo, at least for people who are not very well versed in nutrition. I'm not saying don't ever eat granola, but just be aware that it is much closer to dessert than to a healthy breakfast."

19."Cauliflower everything. Rice, pizza crust, nuggets, etc. Yeah, cauliflower is a pretty good vegetable, and I enjoy it for what it is, but let's not pretend it's something it's very clearly not. No amount of gaslighting in the world will convince me that cauliflower rice is even 10% as good as the real thing."
