The Pentagon on Tuesday identified the U.S. soldier killed over the weekend while destroying an Iranian attack drone in northern Iraq.
Sgt. Michael Emmanuel Swinton, 30, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, was killed in action during a "controlled detonation" of a drone at Erbil Air Base in Iraq, the Pentagon said in a statement.
Secretary of State Mark Rubio told reporters on Sunday that the service members were "decommissioning ammunition" when the accident happened, CBS News reported.
Swinton was part of D Battery, 2nd Battalion, 55th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 108th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
