Actor Paul Wesley, known for his hit role as Stefan Salvatore in The Vampire Diaries, has revealed the one plot point he feels doesn't add up years later.
During a sit-down interview with Alex Cooper on her hit podcast Call Her Daddy, the 43-year-old star discussed his famous role on The Vampire Diaries and the scene that he still has "beef" with years later. The Vampire Diaries follows Elena Gilbert (played by Nina Dobrev), an orphaned teenager in Mystic Falls, Virginia, whose life changes forever when she falls in love with Stefan Salvatore (played by Paul).
In the series, Stefan is a 171-year-old vampire stuck inside a teen's body who returns to Mystic to secretly observe his ancestral home, the Salvatore Estate, and look after his trouble-making brother Damon (played by Ian Somerhalder). Paul's interview comes as his former co-star, Nina, called off her engagement to Olympian Shaun White last year after five years together.

During the interview, Alex went straight to business, asking Paul, "Where do you stand with Matt Donovan today?"
In the series, Matt Donovan (played by Zack Rorig) was the ex-boyfriend to his on-screen love Elena.
To this, Paul replied, "I firstly love a Zack Rorig who played Matt Donovan. My whole gag with Matt Donovan - the whole reason I'm always giving Matt Donovan s--t is because Matt Donovan was the only human. He's the only mortal. Okay. And he's the only one who didn't die. How did he not die?"
He continued, "And I'm like, how did Stefan die like nine times? And then like how did Elena he also there's this one scene where like Stephan, I don't know if you remember this, like Elena's drowning in a car with Matt Donovan and Stephan's like this immortal vampire and I'm like I'm going to go save the love of my life and he dives down there and he's like trying to get her out and she's like 'no no no don't save me save Matt Donovan' and Matt and and Stephan's like okay and then he just takes Matt Donovan and she drowns."
Sharing his reaction to this shock decision by his character, Paul added, "So, like I have this like, you know, I'm like, 'What is going on?' Okay."
Alex then chimed in, "Wait, I forgot that it was Matt Donovan in the car."
To which Paul emphasized, "That's my whole beef. That's my beef."
And while Alex and Paul both recognized that Matt was a core character of the cast, he did not compare to the importance that Elena held in Stefan's life.
Paul concluded, "Look, Matt was an instrumental character, and we love Matt Donovan, but we will love the love of my life here. Come on. And I'm going to say I'm not going to save the sheriff."
This dramatic series of events occurred in the Season 3 finale Episode 22, "The Departed," which originally aired on May 10, 2012. While this decision saved Matt's life, it led Elena to drown in the lake. Luckily for her and Stefan, she still had vampire blood in her system during the accident which then triggered her transition into becoming a vampire.
