Oprah Winfrey has interviewed countless stars over the years, but few moments have gone as viral as her 2021 conversation with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry.
The tell-all interview came about a year after the couple announced they were stepping back from royal duties.
During the conversation, the legendary TV host asked the Duchess of Sussex whether she had been “silent or silenced” by the royal family.
Historic interview
“They didn’t know, obviously, anything that I was going to ask them, but I had said to them ahead of time, ‘I’m going to try to cover everything,’” Winfrey recalled in a video for Vanity Fair.
“This interview took three and a half hours. And as is always the case for me, I want it to be a win-win for you,” she said of her sit-down with the couple. “So I was just trying to carefully go through everything that had come up in the past.”
‘Silent or Silenced’
The interview’s biggest moment came when Meghan spoke about feeling “silent” during her years as a working royal.
“I’ve always valued independence,” the Duchess of Sussex said at the time. “I’ve always been outspoken, especially about women’s rights.”
“I mean, that’s the sad irony of the last four years is, I’ve advocated for so long for women to use their voice,” she continued. “And then, I was silent.”
Winfrey followed up by asking, “Were you silent or were you silenced?” Meghan replied, “The latter.”
Clear response
During the Vanity Fair video, Winfrey poked fun at herself by repeating the hand gesture she made during the interview. “I don’t know where the h*** that came from,” she quipped. “I don’t think I’ve done it since.”
She went on to explain why she pushed Meghan to elaborate on her response. “I wanted to be clear, because was she silenced? Were people telling her not to talk?” she explained.
“I said it for clarification, because I didn’t want later to hear, ‘Well, no, it wasn’t that. It really was that I was silenced. They wouldn’t let me talk.’ So it was all for clarification.”
Ongoing family rift
Meghan’s comments weren’t the only ones that went viral. The 2021 interview also shed light on the ongoing rift between Prince Harry and Prince William.
At the time, the Duke of Sussex said he and his brother were giving each other “space.” However, more than five years later, the two reportedly still aren’t speaking.
“It’s so broken,” an insider recently told People. A second source who knows both brothers added, “I thought it would have perhaps eased a little bit by now, to be honest. But there has been no movement, especially on William’s side. There is no contact.”
