One prediction for training camp, running backs edition

Cowboys roster moves: Phil Mafah and Caelen Carson to IR, C.J. Goodwin and Hakeem Adeniji to roster
One prediction for training camp, running backs edition

What is a bold prediction you have about the Cowboys run game?

We continue our Dallas Cowboys training camp prediction series. Today we’ll look at one of the units on offense that experienced success in 2025, the running backs.

Dallas will carry over the ninth-best rushing attack in terms of yards into 2026, but after a career year from lead back Javonte Williams, 1,201 yards, 11 TDs on 252 carries, some fans are worried that Williams may not be able to keep up the pace. Somebody has to develop behind Williams, not to just to pick up the slack for any kind of drop-off, but also just to spell and complement the lead back.

Last year, Cowboys running backs not named Williams rushed for 397 yards and three touchdowns on 95 carries. That means they rushed for a respectable 4.17 yards a carry, but those numbers are hardly inspiring. The candidates for the RB2 position basically come down to Jaydon Blue, Phil Mafah and Malik Davis.

Prediction: Phil Mafah will emerge as the best back behind Williams

At 6’0”, 234 lbs. Phil Mafah has the physical tools to be able to swipe the second RB spot, as well as the downhill style to complement Williams unlike any other back on the roster.

Cowboys predictions that feel bold now, but won’t be later

If Mafah can take the reins behind Williams, that not only helps open up the run game and offense but also creates an opportunity for all the other backs on the roster to have more clearly defined roles, which could help what was already an efficient unit in 2025 become even more effective.

Mafah only played in one game last year, getting five carries for 18 yards and a touchdown. So he may not look like the guy to jump into the RB2 spot, but we’re going bold with our prediction.
