Oklahoma just gave Florida the blueprint for beating the Sooners in the Swamp

The home slate this year in The Swamp isn’t the most exciting for Gator fans as a whole, but the November 7 game against Oklahoma should be the exception to that rule. It will be just the third all-time meeting between the two teams and the first time the Sooners will have appeared in The Swamp. Depending on how Florida’s season is going to this point, the November matchup could also have playoff implications for both teams.

And while Oklahoma's Brent Venables didn’t mention The Swamp or the Gators by name during his appearance at SEC Media Days in Tampa, he did make a couple of admissions that somewhat lay out the blueprint for how Jon Sumrall could pick up a signature win in 2026.

Oklahoma lays out how Florida could pull off the upset

Whether it’s just coach speak or he really believes it, Venables made sure to temper expectations for Oklahoma’s season. During the Q&A portion of his appearance, he stated:

“As I said opening up, we've got a lot of work to do. We're not a very good team yet. We have a lot of foundational pieces that, as I said, we're really excited about. There's a tremendous eagerness. Learned a lot a year ago. Some of it's affirmation and belief.”

Now, frankly, that sounds like something Sumrall himself might state during his appearance on Wednesday. But it was what Venables stated a couple of minutes earlier that paints a picture of what is possible on November 7:

“Make no mistake, we've got a lot of improvement to do there offensively speaking in being able to run the football. We have to run it a heck of a lot better than we did a year ago. I believe in not only them but the other parts around them offensively.”

If November 7 were in Norman, this admission may not be a big deal. But the strength of Oklahoma’s offense is with their cache of wide receivers, led by Isaiah Sategna, to go with redshirt-senior QB John Mateer.

Now, imagine Mateer trying to communicate with his wide receivers in The Swamp, saying screw it, and being forced to run the ball because it’s the easier option. This isn’t just a hypothetical either, as the Sooner offense struggled on the road last year against Texas, Alabama, and even South Carolina.

And as silly as it may seem, Oklahoma needs to look no further than Texas as their warning sign as to what can happen when you can't run the ball in The Swamp. The Longhorns last year were relegated to just 52 yards rushing, which forced Arch Manning into an ineffective 16/29 with two INTs.

We’ll know way more about Oklahoma once November rolls around and whether their running game really is as bad as Venables claims. But it is a narrative worth keeping an eye on as the lack of a running game plus the environment of The Swamp could be the difference for Florida in 2026.
