College football has entered a new era, and the Oklahoma Sooners were one of the programs that recognized the changes coming before many others.
When NIL and the transfer portal began reshaping the sport, Oklahoma embraced an NFL-style approach to roster management. The Sooners hired general manager Jim Nagy and built a dedicated scouting department designed to identify talent and stay ahead of the competition.
In this new landscape, programs that fail to adapt risk falling behind, and Oklahoma made sure it would not be one of them. However, adapting to this new era has come with its own set of challenges. Programs must now find ways to attract elite high school recruits while also keeping their existing roster intact. Nagy told On3's J.D. PicKell that finding that balance has been one of the biggest challenges of his role.
"When you're at a place like OU, and there's a high expectation, championship-level expectation, we have to go out and get elite high school players," Nagy said. "The cost of acquisition in high school right now for four- and five-star guys is high. But what you can't do is jeopardize your current roster for that. So, finding that balance."
The NIL and transfer portal era has changed college football forever. Oklahoma's decision to adopt an NFL-style front office structure shows the program understands what it takes to compete in the new landscape. But as Nagy explained, the challenge is not simply acquiring talent; it is building a roster that remains competitive year after year.
Finding that balance could be the difference between being a playoff contender and becoming a championship program.
