The actor is the face of TRESemmé’s steamy Hot Curl Summer campaign (trust us, it’s worth a watch)
NEED TO KNOW
- Off Campus breakout star Belmont Cameli is the face of haircare brand TRESemmé’s latest launch
- The actor fronts the new Bouncy Curls Collection and stars in its “Hot Curl Summer” commercial
- In his interview with PEOPLE, Cameli talks his Justin Bieber-era hairstyle, his and Garrett Graham’s curly-hair routines and more
Belmont Cameli joins our Zoom call in the midst of filming season 2 of Off Campus in Vancouver, and his curls look as good as you’d imagine. But despite the fame he — and his hair — have skyrocketed to in the last two months, he remains humble.
In fact, when asked about his routine, and how different it is from his regimen for his hockey player character, Garrett Graham, he shares, “My hair’s bad for TV.”
Let him explain: “It’s always doing something different,” he says of his locks as he dives into the differences between his and Garrett’s hair.
“My whole thing is letting my hair be and just enhancing it with a lightweight product or wearing it as is. And so for Garrett, we do a little bit more to him. We have more time usually, so we’ll diffuse it and then define specific curls because the style has to look the same for continuity.”
Still, there’s no denying that his mane is made for Hollywood, which also made him the perfect guy for TRESemmé to call when it came time to partner with a star.
The 28-year-old actor, who also starred in Peacock’s two-season reboot of Saved by the Bell, is the face of the haircare brand’s “Hot Curl Summer” campaign, which spotlights the new Bouncy Curls Collection. The system includes a shampoo, conditioner, as well as styling products and treatments made for textured hair, and is boosted with a floral, fruity, woodsy scent.
“Having naturally curly hair, it just requires a little more effort,” Cameli tells PEOPLE, adding that “having a good little lineup of products is perfect because they don’t take a lot of time to use and they don’t have a huge price tag [all 10 products in the collection are priced for under $10]. You can just go in and out of the shower and then just go about your day.”
Cameli’s curls grew in as he got older. At that point, it was time for him to become “an adult who had to learn how to take care of his hair.”
He’s still pretty “chill” about his routine and achieves his version of the natural, lived-in look with one move. “Right now, the TRESemmé Bouncy Curls Defining Cream [which smooths and moisturizes curls with a Peptide blend-based formula] is perfect. I just turn my head upside down, give my hair a good scrunch, let it air dry, go in with the Defining Mousse to give it a little lift and volume, then I’m good to go.”

It wasn’t always this simple. The middle-school version of Cameli fell victim to the mid-2010s “Justin Bieber hair swoop” and its coordinating — and necessary — neck flip. (Fate would have the actor and Canadian singer bonding over hockey in a suite at a Los Angeles The Kid LAROI concert but, “I didn’t tell him that I had a brush and a mirror in my locker so that I could try to look like him,” Cameli jokes.) He also recently experimented with a mullet look until landing on his current haircut, which he says is really working for him.
What’s also really working for him, fans would argue, is his heartthrob charm, which has scored him major aura points with viewers of Off Campus. If you thought his portrayal of Garrett opposite Ella Bright’s Hannah made it easy, just wait until you watch TRESemmé’s “Hot Curl Summer, Verified” commercial. Spoiler: he’s shirtless.
“When I went to do our TRESemmé campaign, it was so much fun. Of course, I had my shirt off for the whole thing. I didn’t even think about that because I’m shirtless so often in [Off Campus] that it’s just so commonplace now. And I’ve been taking good care of my body, so I’m like, ‘I feel good.’” That’s partly because of his “simple” ab routine.
“I do a lot more compound movements and power lifting now, but for me, it’s cable crunches. Just drop down on those knees in front of the cables, hold them behind your head, then really flex your spine. You can really load up the weight, and then every week you can add a little more. It hurts a lot and it’s hard to do, but that’s all it takes. And then, I mean, abs are made in the kitchen too, so just eating healthy.”
The rest of the ad sets a summer’s day scene that isn’t that far off from how Cameli would actually spend his ideal day off.
His first order of business is to hop in his car, have a morning session at the gym and join a friend for a coffee. (His order is an iced Americano.) “Then when I get back home, I just want to make myself a sandwich and listen to music or do some reading, and then go to the park in the evening and play catch. I’ve got a bunch of sports gear in the trunk of my car and we’ll go and play baseball, football, volleyball, whatever. I just want to get outside, that’s big for me.”
