Bringing Homer's The Odyssey to life typically requires years of planning and a massive budget.
But the creators of Odysseus: The Fall say artificial intelligence allowed them to complete the ambitious feature-length movie in just a matter of months.
"It takes around two, three months," creator Ash Koosha shared in an exclusive interview with SYFY Wire. "But mainly because it was all myself, just one person on a laptop and part-time doing other things."
Rather than replacing the creative process entirely, AI gave him more time to focus on storytelling.
"The main thing this technology does is swap the actual physical reality that is required to go be present and shoot a film," he explained. "It… doesn’t need the ellipses gives that time back to the vision, to the thinking, to the storytelling."
For Ash, AI acts as an assistant throughout production, helping with visualization and other tasks while leaving the artistic decisions in human hands.
"It's all my decision making. It’s pure human finalization," he said. "The AI only has the role of compressing hundreds of people into one output."
Fountain 0 executive chairman Tom Rogers, said the technology has the potential to transform independent filmmaking.
"It removes the financial constraints that most filmmakers, particularly independent filmmakers, filmmakers that don’t have the access to the kind of budgets that Christopher Nolan does, it takes away that constraint," Rogers shared in the joint interview. "The only limits are imagination."
He emphasized that AI doesn't remove the need for experienced filmmakers.
"It requires an understanding of filmmaking,” Rogers said. "You can't just sit down in a model and prompt it and think you're going to get a quality picture."
Beyond the technology, Ash was inspired to revisit The Odyssey because he wanted to explore the famous hero Odysseus from a more personal perspective.
“The main thing for me,” he said, “and calling the film Odysseus was to focus on something that I think for our generation and the future generations now, it's important to translate, which is his deeper personality."
Odysseus: The Fall is expected to be released later this summer.
