New video shared with KTLA shows Big Bear’s beloved bald eagle, Jackie, locked in a vicious confrontation with two subadult bald eagles near Dana Point Park on Big Bear lake’s north shore before she was rescued by wildlife officials last week.

Wildlife experts determined Jackie sustained no serious injuries in the attack, but she’s currently in “critical condition” and receiving treatment at Ojai Raptor Center for ailments that were preventing her from flying away following the altercation.

She’s said to be suffering from “severe” anemia and inflammation infecting her kidneys. Ojai Raptor Center officials are also awaiting test results in order to determine the underlying causes of her illness, according to wildlife officials.

“Wildlife medicine takes time, and some answers simply cannot be rushed,” Ojai Raptor Center said.

They’re waiting on results for any sign of lead, zinc and rodenticide in her system.

While it is still too early to predict the outcome, the good news is that Jackie is making progress. She’s alert, energetic and eating, according to Ojai Raptor Center said. She’s also standing up and perching.

X-rays showed no signs of fishing hooks, sinkers, or other metal objects in her body.

The center is working with several specialist veterinarians to determine the best supportive care for the eagle as they continue to investigate her illness.

On July 17, a bald eagle later identified as Jackie was observed on the ground near Dana Point Park on Big Bear lake’s north shore. She was then seen a short time later during a ground altercation, which was captured in the video, with two other subadult eagles.

The video showed Jackie successfully fighting off the other eagles by turning over and using her talons, but she was unable to fly far away afterwards.

Friends of Big Bear Valley, which operates the famous eagle nest cam featuring Jackie and her mate, Shadow, said locals and visitors stayed in the area where Jackie was originally grounded to keep an eye on her and contacted several agencies for help.

Firefighter engineer Jonathan Duarte of the San Bernardino County Fire Station 96 in Fawnskin said a good Samaritan came to the station to report an injured eagle.

“My intuition and the probability is that it was one of our local eagles, Jackie or Shadow,” he said.

It was hard to tell, but Duarte and his team responded on Saturday, keeping their distance so as to not stress her out, but staying close enough to ward off any potential predators.

“When she adjusted her perch several times, you could see that her legs were muddied and her talons,” Duarte said.

The best thing they could do was call the experts and wait. “We pulled up some chairs from the local marina and sat there and talked,” he said.

Hours later, San Dimas Raptor Rescue officials arrived. Jackie was then transported to Ojai Raptor Center for care.

Before the incident, Jackie was reportedly not seen on FOBBV’s live camera for several days.

The hope is that after she’s recovered, Jackie can return to her mate Shadow, and her two eaglets.

Ojai Raptor Center said territorial disputes are a normal part of the life of most birds of prey, including bald eagles like Jackie.

Conflicts can occur as younger birds reach breeding age, or when another adult attempts to take over an occupied territory. These disputes may involve aerial chases, talon-grappling and physical attacks, Ojai Raptor Center says. In some cases, the injuries sustained can be fatal.
