Nearly 100 American service members have been injured in Iranian attacks on U.S. bases across the Middle East since July 7, the Pentagon confirmed to CBS News, as renewed fighting between Washington and Tehran enters its second week.
Chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said 96% of those injured had returned to duty and that most suffered minor concussions. The Pentagon has not released a complete breakdown of the attacks, injuries or damage to U.S. facilities.
The latest casualties follow Iranian missile and drone strikes against U.S. and allied military sites in Jordan, Kuwait, Bahrain and elsewhere, CBS News points out. The United States, meanwhile, has conducted nightly strikes against Iranian military targets, saying the campaign is intended to limit Tehran's ability to attack commercial shipping in and around the Strait of Hormuz.
Two U.S. soldiers, 1st Lt. Tyler James Feehan, 25, and Pvt. Isabella Gonzales, 19, were killed in separate Iranian attacks on a base in Jordan, the Pentagon confirmed on Monday. Unidentified remains were also recovered while military personnel searched for a third service member reported missing after the attack.
A third American, Sgt. Michael Emmanuel Swinton, 30, was killed Saturday at Erbil Air Base in Iraq during the controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian attack drone. Another service member was injured in that incident.
NBC News reported that 15 U.S. service members have been killed in combat since military operations against Iran began, while two others have died from noncombat causes. The military has recorded at least 140 wounded personnel since the start of the conflict, including eight with severe injuries, although Pentagon databases contain differing totals and do not yet include the latest casualties.
President Donald Trump has vowed further retaliation, writing that Iran would "pay for that killing many times over" whenever an American soldier is killed.
U.S. Central Command said its latest round of strikes targeted Iranian command centers, air defenses, missile and drone launch sites, maritime capabilities and communications networks. Iran said it responded by targeting U.S. military assets and oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian described the conflict as a "full-scale war," although Tehran has also said messages continue to pass between the two sides through intermediaries.
