When an IndyCar driver weighs in on NASCAR or vice versa, it often gets people talking. That was the case after Scott Dixon made a candid remark about the NASCAR Cup Series.

Speaking to the media after IndyCar qualifying in Nashville on Saturday, Dixon was asked whether he would like to see longer race distances more often. He shifted the conversation to NASCAR and admitted that he is not a fan of watching Cup races because of their length.

“I don’t know. I find it really hard to watch a Cup race these days. It allows for a nap. So maybe that’s good, I don’t know,” Dixon said, as reported by Frontstretch Open Wheel on X.

Dixon’s remarks came during a media session that was otherwise focused on IndyCar’s return to a longer race format. The 400-mile event at the Nashville Superspeedway is one of the longest non-Indy 500 races on the calendar in years and presents new strategic challenges for teams and drivers.

Earlier in the interview shared by Frontstretch, Dixon described his qualifying run as “pretty smooth” despite expecting more challenges from the hotter track conditions. He noted that changing track conditions later in the day could influence racing, with drivers needing to stay on top of their car balance throughout the event.

Eventually, the race was postponed from Sunday evening to Monday afternoon because of rain. The race distance has also been shortened from 300 to 225 laps.

But Scott Dixon’s comments ensured the damage had already been done among NASCAR fans.

What fans said about Scott Dixon’s take on NASCAR

Although the interview centered on IndyCar’s longest race outside the Indy 500 in years, it was Dixon’s brief remark about NASCAR Cup races that ultimately became the biggest talking point online, with fans debating whether his criticism of the series was fair.

The unanimous sentiment was that people did not agree with Dixon, with one user commenting on X, “Throwing shade at NASCAR while your crowds and racing are absolute a** is quite a choice.”

Another seconded the sentiment, writing, “Uh… Indycar puts on the worst product outside of F1 on the planet lol”

Another user said, “That’s awesome, I know 0 people who watch the Melatonin IndyCar series and really couldn’t give a p*** about it unless it’s the Indy 500, if nothing else is on. What a twat.”

Directly addressing the difference in length of NASCAR and IndyCar races, one user wrote,

“IndyCar races are too short, and this ** comes with this against cup; of course he would say races should be 2 laps.”

Another was a little more restrained and offered a balanced take, saying, “Look I like IndyCar. But seriously, other than the Indy 500, nobody even knows that the series exists.”

Do you agree with Dixon’s take or that of the fans opposing him?
