I'm not a huge beer drinker, but I certainly enjoy a light, crispy summer crusher when it's hot out. Once, long ago, during a particularly gnarly heat wave, I walked into a bar manned by a friend. He took one look at me and took pity on me. "You need my special summer brew," he said, and proceeded to fill a pint glass halfway with ice, crack open a Miller High Life, pour it right on top, and stick a straw in it. He slid it over the bar to me, ignoring what was, I'm positive, a highly skeptical expression. "Just try it." It was the most surprisingly refreshing drink I'd ever had.
Why You Should Add Ice to Beer
I know what you're gonna say, but my friend assured me that there's no better way to be refreshed, and he was right. I don't know what it is about the combination of light beer and ice, but it's magical. Yes, you can just have a cold beer. Yes you can serve it in a frosty glass. I hear what you're saying and I see the logic - but this defies logic. Something about the glass being full of ice transforms a regular beer into a cool-blasted treat. The ice melts a bit, which waters it down and makes it somehow even more refreshing. All I can say is you have to try it at least once. Bonus points for a straw.
Tips for Adding Ice to Beer
- Choose your beer wisely. I only do this with what I refer to as a "cool crusher, " specifically a light beer that has a mild flavor (think: Miller High Life or Coors).
- Try it with a straw! I know drinking beer with a straw seems weird, but we drink soda with a straw, so why not? It lends the whole experience more of a "fountain soda" vibe.
- Don't be afraid to accessorize. You've already added ice, why not a squeeze of lime or a pinch of salt? Or both?
