Police have launched a murder investigation after a man assaulted in north Belfast earlier this week has died.
Paul Mackin Junior (44) was attacked at Duncairn Parade in the New Lodge area of the city at around 6pm on Monday.
The victim was later taken to hospital, but he lost his fight for life on Wednesday.
On the same day, police were granted an extension of 36 hours to question two men, aged 41 and 32, who were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
North Belfast Sinn Féin councillor JJ Magee said Mr Mackin’s death was “very, very sad news”.
“My thoughts and condolences go to his family and friends and the wider people on the New Lodge road, who will be in shock at this news,” he added.
In a statement on Thursday, Detective Chief Inspector Jenni Rea said: “Just before 6pm on Monday, 20th July, we received a report of an assault at a residential property in the Duncairn Parade area.
“Officers attended the scene alongside colleagues from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service. A 44-year-old man was taken to hospital for treatment.“Three men – aged 40, 41 and 32 – were arrested a short time later on suspicion of attempted murder.
“Sadly, the injured man, Paul Mackin Junior from the north Belfast area, passed away in hospital yesterday evening, Wednesday 22nd July.
“The arrested 41-year-old man, who remained in custody, has now been arrested on suspicion of murder.
“The 32-year-old man has been released unconditionally.”
Detective Chief Inspector Rea added: “Our thoughts are with Paul’s family at this incredibly difficult time.
“Police would ask that the public avoid speculation on the circumstances around this matter, which is upsetting for the family and friends of Mr Mackin, and could have a detrimental impact on criminal justice proceedings.
“As our investigation into this assault continues, we are appealing to anyone who believes they may have information which could assist our investigation to contact detectives on 101, quoting reference 1454 20/07/26.”
