For NFL rookies, transitioning to the pros is always a shock to the system. But entering training camp under former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin offers an entirely different level of trial by fire.
Former Pittsburgh pass rusher Bud Dupree recently reflected on his early years in the Steel City, describing Tomlin’s summer practices at Saint Vincent College as a true "gladiator school."
Appearing on “Not Just Football with Cam Heyward,” Dupree recalled the overwhelming physical intensity of his first NFL training camp in 2015. Unlike other franchises that ease into padded practices, Tomlin set an unforgiving, battle-tested tone from the very first whistle.
"Camp was like gladiator school, man," Dupree said. "Like it was real life gladiator school. From what [teams] I’ve been on, bro, like that s**t was hardest. Like most physical. Start a day off tackling? Like seven shots? Like directly to the point. No warm up. Just go ahead and get active, like right now. It was fun though.”
That intense environment frequently boiled over into full-scale altercations. Dupree vividly remembered getting kicked out of practice by Tomlin after a fiery rookie pass-rush drill escalated into a brawl with veteran offensive linemen Marcus Gilbert, Maurkice Pouncey, and Ramon Foster.
Heyward said it was the only time he ever saw Tomlin kick someone out of practice.
Dupree started laughing, “That man made me go to the locker room. That was my rookie year. They kept pulling my hair. So, me and Gil got into a fight there. Look, Ramon is my boy but they really tried to jump all over me. I had to fight all them, Pouncey, too.”
While union rules and updated CBA guidelines have gradually softened practice guidelines across the league, Dupree noted that Pittsburgh's identity remains rooted in that brutal physical foundation.
For Tomlin, those high-stakes camp battles weren't just physical conditioning; they were a deliberate rite of passage designed to forge the uncompromising, blue-collar toughness that defines Steelers football.
Now, with Mike McCarthy at the helm, fans are already learning of the many changes being made to training camp, but most are hopeful the team will maintain its physical identity.
