Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Liam Coen has spoken highly about quarterback Trevor Lawrence's development over the past year, with Lawrence particularly seeing improvement as the 2025 season went on. That growth has seemingly continued through the offseason, and it's expected that Lawrence will continue to ascend in 2026.
In a new interview with 'The Schrager Hour,' Coen discussed Lawrence and how he has been performing through the offseason, and noted that he appears to have become more confident, which has led to more improvement.
"I would say the last about eight or so practices, man, he was he was lighting it up," Coen said. "He was making throws on a daily basis that not just myself, but everybody around him were very impressed by. And you're like, well, dang, did he just fit that in there? I think he was trying new things a little bit. The comfort and confidence to just fit some balls into windows maybe he wouldn't otherwise, or to practice some of these new things that we were incorporating throughout the spring, and without thinking as much. And so, as much as we're trying to coach him on a day-to-day basis of improvement, you also at some point want to be able to do just you got it, man, just go play. Here are some of the parameters. Just go play and have fun and cut it loose, which he's continued to do throughout the offseason program. So to get him at a high and confident coming into training camp. Yeah, we're excited about that."
Chosen by the Jaguars with the first overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Lawrence was lauded as a generational talent going into the NFL. But years of instability have hampered his progress, with his career taking on a roller-coaster trajectory rather than a steady climb. Under Coen, however, Lawrence had one of the best seasons of his career and was even an MVP finalist.
Lawrence finished 2025 with 4,214 passing yards, 390 rushing yards, including the postseason, and 41 total touchdowns. He ranked sixth in passing yards and fifth in passing touchdowns among all NFL quarterbacks.
There were some rough spots as the year started and Lawrence adjusted to the third offensive scheme in his career, but once he got more comfortable, he took off and never looked back. It's not difficult to imagine that, with a full year of stability under one of the league's best coaches, 2026 could be his best year yet.
