The Miami Heat were left embarrassed after a scheduled press conference to announce LeBron James on July 27 went live on their YouTube despite James not making a decision yet.
The franchise had to address the mistake by saying that their social media department was preparing for the possibility of James’ signing and mistakenly posted the link to the team’s YouTube page.
It seems the Heat took quick action to punish those responsible, putting up an interesting job listing on LinkedIn just hours later.

After the Heat’s misstep on YouTube became widely known, fans realized that the team also had a job opening for a Director of YouTube Strategy.
Many have assumed the one who uploaded the press conference link was fired, with this job opening becoming available as a result.
However, the timing of the job listing claims it was posted 18 hours before NBA Central posted it. The James press conference mistake had taken place about 12 hours before Central shared it, so it was likely a pre-existing opening.
The team’s Director of YouTube Strategy would likely not be responsible for preparing this future upload, so this was likely a mistake by someone lower down the food chain.
With the gravity of the mistake that was made, the Heat had better fill that position quickly. This was quite embarrassing with James’ decision still pending.
If the Heat do believe they have LeBron in the bag and were making preparations for it, leaking hints to it via a YouTube upload might backfire, as James has still not made his decision public.
It’s been over three weeks since LeBron’s free agency began, and moves like that lead to fans putting more pressure on LeBron to confirm his decision.
If this move prompts James to consider other destinations, it might be one of the costliest social media missteps a modern NBA franchise has ever made.
