Affectionately dubbed Jimothy, this raccoon in Seattle, Washington, is wowing people with its remarkable way of overcoming adversity and surviving in the natural elements of the wild.
Thanks to Kiana Hall, Jimothy was caught on video on Monday, July 13, and in the footage, the animal is seen scurrying away in the most untraditional ways, probably due to a rare condition.
Jimothy the Raccoon Likely Suffers from a Congenital Spinal Deformity
In the brief video clip below, Jimothy appears to have a uniquely rounded back and shortened neck. As such is the case, when he runs away, he does so in an unorthodox manner, different from what many people will recall of a raccoon. Take a look.
As for the cause of Jimothy’s appearance, Marcie Logsdon, an associate professor at Washington State University’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital, shared with The Seattle Times that the animal likely suffers from a congenital spinal deformity. Although she couldn’t be certain without examination. If Jimothy actually does suffer from a spinal deformity, it’s probable that it’s short spine syndrome. The condition is marked by a compressed vertebrae, resulting in a shortened body and neck.
Speaking more on Jimothy, Logsdon noted, “The fact that he’s made it to this age tells me that he’s managing and that he’s adapting.” To her point, Jimothy seemingly thriving in the wild without human interference is a testament to the animal’s ability to adapt and determination to survive. This is especially true when placed in the context of the old adage, “Survival of the fittest.”
As Jimothy gains more fans on social media, we’ll all have to wait and see if more people will flock to Seattle to look for Jimothy and if more videos of him will surface in the immediate future.
