A 15-year-old boy drowned while swimming near a Hudson Valley waterfall on Sunday, July 19, police said.
Matthew Strahan, of Poughkeepsie, traveled to High Falls Waterfall in Marbletown with a 24-year-old female family member, New York State Police said.
Strahan and his relative were in a swimming hole on Rondout Creek when he slipped beneath the waterfall and began to drown around 2:30 p.m., authorities said. Several bystanders saw Strahan go underwater and tried to rescue him, but they were not successful, police said.
A member of the state police underwater recovery team arrived on the scene and located Strahan in about eight to 10 feet of water, troopers said. He received lifesaving measures before he was taken to Health Alliance Hospital in Kingston and pronounced dead.
State police are still investigating the incident.
