The Arizona Cardinals' Jacoby Brissett problem carries into training camp, as the two sides still can't reach a contract agreement.

Football is finally back! Well, kind of. The Arizona Cardinals open their 2026 training camp on Wednesday, July 22nd.

Although the Cardinals are coming off a three-win season and have made few offseason moves that suggest this 2026 season will be much different, it's still an exciting time in the valley. It's the start of a new rebuilding era as fans eagerly await to see what rookie Jeremiyah Love will bring to the table and how new head coach Mike LaFleur will get all these offensive weapons involved.

Of course, the biggest cloud currently circling the Cardinals heading into training camp is who will be their Week 1 signal-caller in that new LaFleur offense?

Cardinals' Jacoby Brissett problem carries into training camp

Jacoby Brissett was a serviceable stopgap in Kyler Murray's absence, starting 12 games last season. But now that he enters the 2026 season projected to be the team's starter, he expects to be compensated as such.

Brissett is currently on the books for $4.9 million, only $1.5 million of which is guaranteed. That's nowhere close to other starting quarterbacks around the league. From Arizona's standpoint, the issue is, well, he's not quite as good as other starting quarterbacks around the league. While they agree he deserves more than that figure, the two sides still can't agree on what that amount entails.

Brissett didn't participate in the Cardinals' voluntary workouts this offseason, though he did attend mandatory minicamp to avoid getting fined.

Tuesday, NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that the two sides have not found a resolution heading into Wednesday's training camp.

At least Brissett is a 33-year-old veteran with years of experience implementing new offensive systems throughout his career as a journeyman. Still, this is a crucial time to familiarize himself with LaFleur's revamped offense.

Coming over as the Rams' offensive coordinator under Sean McVay, it's expected that the Cardinals' offense will have a lot of pre-snap motion. Even given Brissett's resume, one has to wonder how much this will negatively affect the Cardinals heading into what was already going to be a challenging season.

Hopefully, the two sides can come to an agreement sooner rather than later. A raise for this upcoming season is reasonable, as long as Arizona isn't adding years onto his contract. It's clear Brissett is a stopgap rather than their long-term answer at starting quarterback, hence why they're hesitant to give him what he wants in the first place.
