Insider reports confirm roster featuring Jean Grey, Cyclops, and Emma Frost, with filming set to begin spring 2027.

Marvel Studios has reportedly finalized the core roster for its upcoming X-Men film, arriving after Avengers: Secret Wars. The new team will mark the MCU's first major mutant saga, building on characters who may begin appearing earlier in projects like Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Secret Wars itself.

The core X-Men roster

According to insider Apocalyptic Horsemen, who has proven credible on previous scoops, the main X-Men lineup includes Cyclops, Jean Grey, Emma Frost, Rogue, Storm, Professor X, and Magneto. Additional characters reportedly under consideration include Beast, Angel, and potentially Nightcrawler.

Jean Grey is expected to be introduced first, appearing in Spider-Man: Brand New Day before the standalone X-Men film. This early introduction follows Marvel's strategy to establish her character before exploring the Mr. Sinister and Madeline Pryor storylines that are central to the mutant saga's direction.

The focus on Jean and Cyclops

The relationship between Jean Grey and Cyclops will serve as the foundation for the MCU's mutant storylines. Their dynamic and the various narrative threads tied to their characters are expected to drive much of the early X-Men saga, including the Phoenix storyline that Fox explored but Marvel Studios has yet to adapt.

Cyclops will function as the field leader of Professor X's team, positioning him as a central figure throughout the franchise.

Casting developments

Several actors are in talks for key roles. Patrick Wilson is being considered for Professor Xavier, bringing both the look and acting capability for the role. Bill Skarsgård is also reportedly in talks for an unconfirmed role, possibly Xavier.

For other characters, casting insiders report that Sydney Sweeney is being considered for Emma Frost, while three actors are competing for Beast: Charles Melton (currently the frontrunner), Jesse Plemons, and Logan Lerman.

Adam Driver has been reported as Marvel's choice for Magneto, a casting decision that has received mixed reactions from fans.

Villain plans and production timeline

Marvel Studios plans to feature Mr. Sinister and Apocalypse as the X-Men saga's primary villains. Both are established X-Men antagonists with deep comic history, offering substantial material for major story arcs.

Production is scheduled to begin in spring 2027, immediately after Avengers: Secret Wars wraps. Kevin Feige has confirmed the X-Men film will follow Secret Wars in the MCU release schedule, arriving after Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday.

Wolverine will not be part of the main lineup, though Hugh Jackman's version of the character is expected to remain in the MCU for extended appearances separate from the core X-Men franchise.
