Victor von Doom is already one of Marvel's most recognizable villains, and his name alone carries enough weight to strike fear into heroes across the multiverse. Between his status as the ruler of Latveria, one of Marvel's greatest scientific minds, and a master of the mystic arts, Doom has accumulated more titles than most comic book characters could ever hope for. Even so, Marvel has never been shy about giving its biggest characters a fresh nickname from time to time. Sometimes those new monikers disappear after a single storyline. Others become part of comic book history.
Ahead of Doctor Doom's biggest year yet, with Robert Downey Jr. preparing to bring the villain to the forefront of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel may have stumbled onto one nickname for the iconic character that is simply too good to ignore. The new name doesn't come from Doom himself, either, but courtesy of Miles Morales, who wastes no time giving Latveria's ruler a title that perfectly captures the unusual position he finds himself in.
In a preview for this week's Godzilla Conquers the Multiverse #1, Miles Morales greets Doom with a simple line, assigning a new nickname to the feared villain: "Captain Latveria." It's an obvious play on Captain America, but it fits well in this case. He continues, making the inspiration behind the new nickname even clearer:
"Avengers of Doom... ASSEMBLE!"
Spider-Man Has the Perfect New Name for Doctor Doom
In the issue, Doom finds himself leading a mission to stop a multiversal threat in the shape of Godzilla, placing him in a role typically reserved for Earth's greatest heroes. Miles immediately notices the irony, giving the Marvel villain a title that sounds just heroic enough to annoy him. Doom is still unmistakably Doom, which makes the joke land a bit better. He's obviously not trying to become Captain America; he's just leading the mission because he believes he's the only person capable of doing it. Saving reality is just another opportunity to prove he's the smartest man in the room.
It's also a great time to give Doom a little extra attention in the comics. Doctor Doom is about to become an even bigger part of Marvel's future when Downey Jr. fully debuts as Victor von Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. Marvel Studios recently released the movie's first full trailer, offering the clearest look yet at the MCU's take on the iconic villain ahead of the movie's December 18 release. Spider-Man, meanwhile, is set to return to theaters next week with Brand New Day, though it remains to be seen if and when Miles Morales' version of the character will be joining the MCU in this movie or any others.
