It’s getting to be that time of the offseason in which the market is looking towards next season’s favorites. While some of the usual suspects top most preseason rankings, the pros are looking to the data to determine who could make a strong run this upcoming season.
And according to the numbers, the market seems bullish on the New Jersey Devils making some headway in 2026-27.
The study recently published by Oddscheckers shows the Devils in a pretty good spot heading into next season. Oddscheckers’ proprietary algorithm shows that New Jersey has a 7.69% chance of making it all the way out of the Eastern Conference and into the Stanley Cup Final.
That may not seem like a significant margin. For comparison’s sake, the defending champs, the Carolina Hurricanes, have a 19.61% chance of making it out of the East.
The team with the best chance, per the early data, is the Florida Panthers at 21.74%. Again, that may not seem like strong chances. But bear in mind these probabilities are based on data across a highly competitive Eastern Conference.
The numbers show that the Devils will not only be a playoff team this upcoming season, but they could make a hard push come playoff time.
Devils’ success will come down to goaltending
The Devils should be a good team this upcoming season. They’ll be looking to prove that 2025-26 was an aberration. Like other Eastern Conference clubs, New Jersey will be looking to make their playoff miss a one-year hiatus.
However, that success depends on the Devils getting good goaltending. The tandem of Jake Allen and Nico Daws doesn’t exactly inspire fear in the NHL. Even with David Rittich as insurance, there are question marks about this trio.
We know that Allen is a good goalie. There’s no question about it. And he’s been a starter before. But can he be good enough to carry the Devils this upcoming season? That’s one issue.
Another issue lies in the backup role. If Daws can’t provide, say, 30+ starts, would Rittich be able to pick up the slack? Will the Devils have to keep three goalies all season long?
Those are all questions that the club will have to answer. If the Devils can’t get consistent goaltending, there may be a need to go out and find another netminder. Perhaps Sunny Mehta is already working on that.
But until we see the on-ice product, it might be tough to remain bullish about the Devils’ chances this upcoming season.
