The Mariners announced that infielder/outfielder Miles Mastrobuoni has cleared waivers and been sent outright to Triple-A Tacoma. He has the right to elect free agency but MLBTR has learned that he will accept the assignment.
Mastrobuoni has been a light-hitting utility/depth player for many years now. In 208 big league games for the Rays, Cubs and Mariners, he has a .228/.293/.271 line. But he has 22 stolen bases and defensive experience at every position except for catcher and center field.
He exhausted his final option year in 2025, leaving him out of options coming into this year. That put him in a fringe roster position but he suffered a calf strain playing for Italy in the World Baseball Classic. He started the season on the injured list. He was reinstated in June but was designated for assignment just over a week later. He cleared waivers and stuck with the Mariners at the Triple-A level. That gave them the opportunity to add him back to the roster in early July when Julio Rodríguez hit the IL. Mastrobuoni was sent into DFA limbo again when Rodríguez returned a few days ago.
Since this is his second outright, Mastrobuoni could have chosen the open market. Instead, it seems he’ll return to Tacoma and get playing time there as he awaits another chance in the big leagues.
