PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — Nearly six years after a shooting in front of a Landover apartment complex left a 22-year-old man dead, police announced Wednesday that a man wanted for the murder is in custody.
The Prince George’s County Police Department (PGPD) said investigators arrested 34-year-old Dayvon Gordon in Washington, D.C., Tuesday evening in connection with the October 2020 shooting death of 22-year-old Andre Lamont Cox Jr.
Officials noted that Gordon’s arrest comes just weeks after the police department and Cox’s family held a press conference to raise awareness and make a public plea for information, and that detectives found the D.C. man using “various investigative techniques.”
“In addition to our tremendous law enforcement partners, the PGPD is also appreciative of members of the media and the community for assisting us by sharing information on our years-long search for Gordon. It took each component to finally bring this murder suspect into custody. Hopefully this arrest brings some comfort to Andre’s still grieving family,” PGPD Chief George Nader said in a statement.
According to PGPD, the investigation began on the evening of Oct. 27, 2020, when officers responded to the 3200 block of 75th Avenue for a shooting.
There, police found Cox with multiple gunshot wounds. He died a short time later in the hospital.
In the weeks following the murder, detectives identified two suspects, including Gordon. Police said the shooting was targeted, over a dispute.
Officers arrested the other suspect, Tahj Vandy, shortly after the shooting. He is awaiting sentencing.
Authorities charged Gordon with first- and second-degree murder and other related charges. As of Wednesday, he remains in custody in D.C. as he awaits extradition to Prince George’s County.
