It was one of the topics of conversation on the rest day: the poor-quality hotels where some riders had to stay. The hotel where Uno-X, Alpecin-Premier Tech, and Picnic PostNL were staying stood out for all the wrong reasons, and as it happens, one of the riders from the Norwegian team—Magnus Cort—is writing a review for each hotel during the Tour de France.
Cort, who is retiring after this season, has been doing this for years using the hashtags #RoomsandRatings and #ItsHardToBeACyclist. On the rest day, of all days, his team and two others stayed in a hotel with cobwebs, cockroaches, and more. Tobias and Anders Halland Johannessen decided to sleep outside, as did Alpecin-Premier Tech rider Silvan Dillier.
And so we eagerly awaited Cort’s review, which came out at… 1 out of 7 stars. “We also stayed here two years ago during the Tour. And even though it was only one night, it left lasting memories. It has a great view and looks pretty good from the outside,” said Cort, who this time stayed for two nights and the rest day.
"But in reality, it's one of the worst places I've ever stayed. We had an entire apartment that could sleep up to 8 people, so Anthon (Charmig, ed.) and I couldn't complain about a lack of space," Cort begins, still somewhat positively.
Cort is not happy with the hotel
"The apartment had three floors, with the entrances, toilets, and bathrooms on the bottom floor. This time it wasn't completely soaked, and there was only a faint musty smell. We were also lucky that there was dry toilet paper. There was a sink in the closet, which was nice, so I didn’t have to walk up two flights of stairs at night.”
That’s when he really lets loose. “It’s hard to say many positive things about this place. It was dirty, there was no air conditioning and no Wi-Fi. A lot of things were broken, like the toilet paper holder and the showerhead. Although it was better than last time, it still only gets 1 out of 7 stars. I can’t find it or tag it on Instagram, but it’s called Village Montanha Appart’Hotel Lioran. Maybe it’s a smart business decision not to be online?”
