Mage bot is not the real problem – support might be

Many players are calling for nerfs to champions like Seraphine, Ziggs, or other AP picks in the bot lane, but a Reddit-Thread raises a different question: are mages really the problem, or does the meta simply show how strong support roaming has become? That creates a much more interesting discussion than just "mages bot are too strong."

Why Mage Bot Works So Well Right Now

The core argument is simple: mage bot laners often do not have to win lane. They only have to stabilize it. Champions with strong waveclear can answer minion waves quickly, secure farm, and prevent the lane from completely falling apart. That frees the support to leave bot lane earlier and influence the map.

That changes what bot lane actually does. In the traditional version, ADC and support play a 2v2 lane together, the support protects the carry, and the carry scales. In the current discussion, however, bot lane looks more like a setup that allows the support to become a second jungler as early as possible.

If the best way to win is to unlock your support and send them around the map, champions that can survive alone become much more attractive. Mages fit that profile very well. They usually need less direct protection, have safe waveclear, and can still remain useful with fewer resources.

Nerfing Mages Only Solves Part of the Problem

Of course, that does not mean mage bot is never a problem. Some of these picks can be frustrating because they push traditional marksmen out of lane, neutralize early trades, and still bring strong teamfight tools. Riot already nerfed Seraphine bot in Patch 26.14, which shows that individual champions can still deserve direct changes.

But the bigger question remains: what happens if Riot only nerfs the mages? The meta may simply move to the next champion that can clear waves safely and survive alone. The underlying issue would remain if the strongest bot lane plan is still to let the support leave lane as early as.

That is why the Reddit angle is interesting. It moves the debate away from individual champions and toward the structure of the role. Maybe mages are not the root cause, but the symptom. They are becoming popular because they use a system especially well in which support mobility and map impact are extremely valuable.

Support Is Much More Than a Lane Partner Now

Support has not been a pure protection role in modern League for a long time. Good supports influence mid lane, help the jungler with vision, start roams, secure objectives, and create plays across the map. That development is generally positive, because it keeps support active and creative.

The problem only starts when that map presence does not cost enough. If a support can leave lane early without their own bot laner being heavily punished, the trade becomes very strong: you lose very little bot, but gain pressure around mid, jungle, and objectives.

Traditional ADCs suffer from that more heavily. Many marksmen need protection, time, and space. If their support roams, they can be dove, zoned away from waves, or forced into bad resets. Mages often handle that phase better. They can farm from range, clear waves, and wait while their support creates value somewhere else.

The Counterargument Still Matters

Still, it would be too easy to blame support alone. Some players fairly argue that mages are strong even without roaming. Many AP bot laners have high base value, simple laning patterns, and less mechanical pressure than traditional ADCs. Their win rates can also look high because they are easier to execute or picked into specific matchups.

Riot also does not seem to view mage bot as inherently unhealthy. More variety in bot lane can be good, as long as marksmen remain the majority of picks and the role is not completely pushed out. A game where only ADCs are allowed to function bot would also be unnecessarily narrow.

So the question is not whether mages belong in bot lane. The better question is why they fit the current ecosystem so well.

What Would Riot Actually Have to Change?

If Riot wants to reduce mage bot long-term, pure champion nerfs may not be enough. Possible targets could include support items, roam timings, gold generation away from lane, or systems that do not punish very low-level supports enough for aggressive roams. Those changes would be difficult, though, because support should not be pushed back into a passive role.

That is the tricky part. Support should have impact, but that impact needs real costs. Mage bot should be a legitimate alternative, but it should not automatically become the best answer to a system where the support wants to leave lane as early as possible.

In the end, the mage bot debate is less about one champion class and more about role design. If bot lane increasingly revolves around who can unlock their support best, then Seraphine alone is not the problem. Riot may need to look at how much power support roaming should really have right now.

Can AI chatbots make mental health worse? Study identifies five risky patterns

The use of generative AI has become so widespread that ChatGPT is gradually becoming a verb, much like Google and Photoshop. Hundreds of millions of people now use large language model (LLM)-based chatbots for advice on personal, emotional and mental health problems. The reasons are largely practical: they are available 24/7, easy to access and nonjudgmental. Scientists are worried that this behavior might delay people from reaching out to...
