LeBron James may be the biggest free agent available this summer, but he’s far from the only notable player who remains unsigned. The list currently includes high-profile names like Draymond Green, James Harden, and young swingman Jonathan Kuminga.
Regarding the situation with Kuminga, multiple teams have expressed interest in either signing a contract outright or securing a sign-and-trade. So far, Kuminga has yet to find an offer to his liking, but the Los Angeles Clippers could change things after being revealed as his newest suitor.
“Kuminga, 23, has also drawn sign-and-trade interest from the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Milwaukee Bucks. As Kuminga and his agent, Aaron Turner of Verus Basketball, navigate his free agency, each interested team has its own unique profile and variables being weighed, such as his average annual salary, roster fit, and deal structure,” reported Scotto. “There is no specific dollar amount Kuminga is seeking that applies to all interested teams.”
The Clippers are in a transition period right now following the departures of James Harden and Kawhi Leonard. But between Darius Garland, Benedict Mathurin, and Rui Hachimura, they already have a solid core foundation, even if it’s not enough to contend. The addition of Kuminga alone would not put them over the top, but it would add another skilled young player to the roster, which they could either keep or flip into other assets. By all accounts, Kuminga would be a low-risk, high-reward addition for the Clips, but it’s unclear how he feels about their situation.
At 23, Jonathan is reportedly seeking around $25 million per year after the Hawks declined his $24.3 million team option. As a young and versatile forward with potential for growth, he’s been a target for teams like the Lakers, who need win-now depth players on the wing. Last season, in 36 games, he averaged 12.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 0.9 steals, and 0.3 blocks per game on 47.6% shooting and 34.6% shooting from three, and he could provide a valuable spark in the right situation.
Unfortunately, the current CBA has limited financial flexibility across the league, making teams think twice about meeting Kuminga’s contract demands. Besides his high salary expectations and modest scoring numbers, the hesitation with Kuminga stems from his previous stints in Golden State and Atlanta. With the Warriors especially, Kuminga struggled to fit in, and he clashed with head coach Steve Kerr on the way out in what became a dramatic and ugly departure. Still, Kuminga believes he knows his worth, and he’s willing to wait as long as it takes to get his way.
At this point, only time will tell where Kuminga ends up, but he’s in no rush to decide. With multiple teams in pursuit, there’s a lot for the young athlete to think about when making his choice. Money is obviously going to play a big factor, but he also wants to find a place where he can thrive in a big role while playing meaningful, competitive games. The Clippers certainly fit the bill, but it’s impossible to be sure where they stand from Kuminga’s perspective.
