The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has unveiled a first look at Gandalf in Season 3. The new image gives an exciting preview of what’s ahead for the fantasy series.

What do we see in the first look at Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power Season 3?

Empire has revealed a world-exclusive first look at Daniel Weyman’s return as Gandalf in Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3. Having spent the first two seasons as the enigmatic Stranger, the character finally adopts the legendary wizard’s familiar look, donning a long beard, staff, and gray hat.

Weyman said the transformation came after a conversation with showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay before filming began. The actor told Empire, “Just before we started Season 3, J.D. and Patrick told me – we want to see that Gandalf has arrived. We want to see him as the wizard we all love from Tolkien’s writings. I found this new side to him, the side that we all hopefully recognise: the mischief, the twinkle in his eye.”

The actor also commented that wearing Gandalf’s costume for the first time was a magical experience. Weyman said, “Unbelievably spine-tingling. I was pinching myself all the way through.”

Gandalf will also be featured in a bigger role in the third season, as darkness falls on Middle-earth and Sauron begins to grow stronger. According to Payne, Gandalf’s journey will move beyond simply learning to control his powers.

The showrunner said, “He’s going from learning how to control his powers to understanding that wizards actually have a prophetic dimension. That their job is to inspire the hearts of the people around them to find their own courage to unite against the darkness."

The first look offers the clearest view yet of Gandalf’s next chapter in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Prime Video has yet to announce the release date for Season 3.
