LG UltraGear owners are seeing unexpected McAfee ads

LG's UltraGear monitors have gained an unwelcome Windows-side addition: an automatically installed LG utility that can push McAfee and LG app ads onto the desktop. That is the key issue for AV and gaming-display buyers. The monitor connection is not just triggering a driver package; it is also bringing in an app installer that does not appear to add special monitor controls of its own. Instead, the app points users toward LG's other apps, along with McAfee antivirus.

The auto-install behavior has reportedly been visible in user reports as far back as 2024, but the current attention comes from recent Reddit complaints and Gamers Nexus testing. Users complained about large pop-up ads for McAfee and LG's own apps appearing in the bottom-right corner of the Windows homescreen.

Gamers Nexus saw that behavior repeatedly. In the test cited by The Verge, the pop-up appeared on 31 out of 32 bootups, which turns this from a one-off annoyance into a persistent desktop interruption for affected users. For shoppers comparing premium monitors, that matters because the experience extends beyond panel performance, refresh rates, and physical design into the software path Windows activates once the display is connected.

The installation route appears tied to Microsoft's Hardware Support App framework. Microsoft allows developers to pair a Hardware Support App in the Windows Store with device metadata, letting the app install automatically when the relevant hardware is connected.

Microsoft's own description includes a direct warning about the experience: "The automatic installation feature does not provide a notification to the user when the app is installed. Some users may find this experience confusing and frustrating, and give your app a bad rating."

That warning describes the core problem plainly. A monitor buyer can connect new hardware, let Windows complete the expected setup process, and still end up with a vendor app installed in the background. The mechanism is not unique to LG. The permissions attached to the LG Monitor App Installer add another reason this story is drawing attention. According to Gamers Nexus, the Windows Store page says the app requires permission to "use all system resources" and "access your Internet connection."

Users have identified possible methods to stop the LG app from auto-installing. On Pro versions of Windows, users have reported blocking it through a group policy setting. On Windows Home editions, users might be able to turn off the behavior by selecting "No" on the option to automatically download manufacturers' apps and custom icons, found inside the Advanced system settings section.

Those workarounds are useful, but they also underline the larger trend. Display manufacturers increasingly rely on Windows integration paths that can install companion software automatically, and buyers now need to treat that software behavior as part of the product experience. For LG monitor owners affected by these pop-ups, the issue is not the existence of a support app by itself; it is that Windows can install it silently, and that the app can then place ads directly onto the desktop.
