Connecticut education officials and school boards should keep their eyes wide open about the new public education curriculum on "Arab and Islamic studies for schools," which is to be formulated under new legislation. While the new curriculum can create an opportunity for students, there are a number of states where Arab studies curricula have turned virulently anti-Jewish.
While the funding will likely come from Qatar Foundation International (QFI), already invested in New Haven schools, or its affiliates, I note that QFI has a bad track record in separating fact from anti-Jewish propaganda. QFI maps, included as "teaching tools" for U.S. schools, actually erased Israel from the Middle East, renaming it "Palestine." While that was a seemingly bloodless eradication of the Jewish state, educators must beware, as antisemitism rises four-fold in Qatar-supported U.S. schools. And let's not forget that Qatar is a prime sponsor of Hamas terrorism and is home to Hamas leaders who live there in luxury while their terrorists in Gaza steal civilian aid intended to feed the populace.
Education is one of Connecticut's highest strengths and values. These new classes should be a doorway to peace and not a path to further violence against Jews or against the West more broadly.
