Fairy Tail Officially Returns On July 29 With New Manga Called Re:Fantasia
As 2026 approached, we all had a feeling that Fairy Tail would get a major announcement, and this is because the series is celebrating its 20th manga anniversary. Fairy Tail started its run on August 2, 2006, in Weekly Shonen Magazine Issue #36. The story was crafted by Hiro Mashima, and he is now returning in full force to write and draw a new spin-off story of this beloved universe he has created.
The announcement that Fairy Tail would return with a new spin-off manga was first made on April 7, 2026. Since then, we have been waiting for more information concerning this series. Now we know that Fairy Tail Re:Fantasia is returning with 9 chapters, releasing weekly in Weekly Shonen Magazine starting on July 29, 2026, with Issue #35.
We don't yet have confirmation about what Fairy Tail Re:Fantasia will be about, but based on previous teasers, we anticipate it is a very interesting manga that is likely going to focus on Laxus Dreyar, the grandson of the Fairy Tail Guild leader Makarov Dreyar. When it comes to Laxus, many fans have already held him as their favorite with his heated personality and incredible powers as a Dragon Slayer. Since his first appearance, he has consistently ranked among the Top 10 in Fairy Tail popularity polls.
We can't wait for the story to make its return, this time, with Hiro Mashima's iconic art style, after years of absence. Of course, it must be said that even though a new Fairy Tail spin-off is going to be serialized in Weekly Shonen Magazine, the current, still ongoing sequel manga, Fairy Tail 100 Year Quest, which started on July 25, 2018, is still releasing biweekly. The artist handling it is Atsuo Ueda, even though the story is still from Hiro Mashima. This means the story doesn’t collide with Mashima’s new work, and he’s able to focus on both at once.

Previously, it was planned for an August 5, 2026, release, but it was brought forward to July 29, 2026, much to the excitement of thousands of fans who can't wait for the return of this iconic franchise.
Fairy Tail Teases 4 New Announcements With Its New Manga Return
While we're all extremely excited for the return of the manga by Hiro Mashima in the next issue of Weekly Shonen Magazine, there is more to expect from the 20th anniversary event for Fairy Tail. For one, it's already been teased by Hiro Mashima, the creator behind Fairy Tail, that four major announcements concerning his franchise are coming. These announcements don't include the release of the new spin-off manga. For now, we have no information about what these new reveals will be, but we are sure that at least one of them will be a big one, worth the wait.
One thing that fans are especially looking forward to is a new Fairy Tail anime season. Fairy Tail's last anime season was The 100 Year Quest Season 1, which aired between July 7, 2024 and January 5, 2025. We anticipate a new season for The 100 Year Quest to be announced soon enough, but hopefully, we'll get to see a quality upgrade after the disappointing first season left much to be desired. More excitingly, of course, we would love to see a remake of the Fairy Tail anime, which, by modern standards, could be considered outdated, as it saw its release between 2009 and 2019.
Other than that, we can also expect some smaller announcements to be made. An art exhibition could be one of them, or new miscellaneous releases such as a Fairy Tail collab, and potentially even the reveal of a new video game. It's hard to say what's planned for the future of Fairy Tail, but we're definitely excited for what this 20th anniversary event could bring forward.
Fairy Tail’s Re-emergence As A Hit Shonen Series Rivaling One Piece
Fairy Tail was one of the biggest Shonen series serialized once upon a time, being considered one of the most popular series to not be serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump series. In fact, in the early 2010s, some would even consider it a rival to the Big Three anime, notably One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach. Its adventure aspect especially made it a rival to One Piece, and the main characters were also quite similar.
Even sales-wise, Fairy Tail was not doing too badly, being able to accumulate 72 million copies in circulation over the span of 63 volumes. Because of that, many people believe that a Fairy Tail revival is needed so that it can once again rival big hit series like One Piece. A Fairy Tail remake would put the series back on many fans' radar, especially if it's a good adaptation.
After all, even an anime series like One Piece, which currently already has an ongoing adaptation by Toei Studio, is planned for a remake by WIT Studio. This remake would fix its pacing and upgrade its animation. Something like that would be a blessing for an anime like Fairy Tail, which was also released as a weekly series. Since Fairy Tail struggled with a lot of filler, subpar animation, and slow pacing, we would love to see a new take on it in the future. For now, we all have a new manga to enjoy.
