The latest developer preview includes hidden references to an iPhone that uses two batteries.

Apple's latest iOS 27 software preview includes hidden code that offers more hints about the launch of its long-rumored foldable iPhone.

As MacWorld notes, code strings associated with the Battery Health feature in the fourth version of iOS 27's developer preview refer to multiple internal batteries within a single device.

Apple has never sold an iPhone with more than one internal battery, but leaks suggest it may use dual-cell tech for its rumored foldable. These terminology changes may indicate Apple is preparing its documentation for when a foldable device is released.

As confirmed by MacRumors, one of the code snippets reads, “The batteries in this iPhone are performing as expected." Another part of the code says, "The health of the batteries in this iPhone has significantly degraded. An Apple Authorized Service Provider can replace the batteries to restore full performance and capacity."

A previous report from Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station claimed Apple plans to use a 1,921mAh cell paired with a larger 2,962mAh battery, each sitting on either side of a foldable device. If true, Apple will be required to update its software to help engineers identify which batteries need repair.

Earlier iOS 27 betas have hinted at a foldable iPhone, including support for widgets that expand into full-page view and code that mentions a "foldState."

Apple hasn't confirmed anything, of course, but it's expected to unveil a foldable iPhone alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in September. The more affordable iPhone 18 and 18e aren't expected until 2027. The foldable could be called the iPhone Ultra and come with a price tag that tops $2,000.
