19-year-old football star Lamine Yamal had just helped Spain secure their second FIFA World Cup title, following their historic 2010 triumph. But rather than focusing on his incredible achievement, some social media users zeroed in on a 20-second clip showing Yamal and his girlfriend Inés García together on the pitch.
In the footage, Yamal appears to adjust his hair using his phone camera while wearing sunglasses and his gold medal. García can be seen smiling and rubbing his back as she speaks to him, but Yamal doesn’t appear to look directly at her before eventually walking away.
The clip quickly went viral on X, with one post receiving millions of views and thousands of likes. Critics accused Yamal of deliberately ignoring his girlfriend, with some calling his behavior a “red flag.” One person wrote, “her smile slowly fading away, poor thing” while another added, “So annoying this kind of situation.”
Others, however, strongly defended the footballer, arguing that he had just won the biggest trophy in football and was likely overwhelmed by the moment. One person wrote, “I don’t see anything wrong here” while another said, “lol he was trying to enjoy the moment and not spend it on a wag who could leave his life right after.”
The debate also comes amid widespread interest in the couple’s relationship. García has previously pushed back against several viral rumors about how they first met, explaining that the pair connected through social media rather than through the dramatic story that had circulated online. She has also denied claims that she ended a previous five-year relationship because of a message from Yamal, calling the rumor “nonsense.”
While the internet continues to analyze the couple’s every interaction, Yamal’s biggest achievement came on the pitch. His World Cup triumph adds another remarkable chapter to a career that has already seen him break records at an extraordinary age.
Yamal made his senior debut for Barcelona as a teenager after coming through the club’s famed La Masia academy and quickly established himself as one of football’s brightest young stars. He became the youngest player ever nominated for the Ballon d’Or and won the Kopa Trophy, awarded to the world’s best young player.
His rise is particularly remarkable given his humble beginnings in Rocafonda, a working-class neighborhood near Barcelona. His parents, Mounir Nasraoui and Sheila Ebana, both have African heritage, with his father born in Morocco and his mother in Equatorial Guinea.
Perhaps the most incredible part of Yamal’s story is his connection to Lionel Messi. The two first met in 2007, when Messi was a rising Barcelona star and Yamal was just a baby. A photograph from the encounter later went viral, with Messi pictured holding the future football sensation.
Years later, the pair found themselves on opposite sides of a World Cup final, with Yamal representing Spain and Messi captaining Argentina. For Yamal, lifting the trophy at just 19 marked a stunning full-circle moment.
