Lamine Yamal operates with the self-assuredness of someone who has won eight major trophies. Newly 19, the FC Barcelona star winger became the first player under age 20 to win the UEFA European Championship and the FIFA men’s World Cup. Spain won Euro 2024 over England and beat Argentina to win the 2026 World Cup last Sunday, July 19.
After the final whistle, Yamal dropped on his knees to pray. He was alone with his thoughts, completely serene, while all hell broke loose behind him. The 19-year-old behaving more maturely than several grown men punching the living daylights out of each other. It’s an incredible video.
Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes went viral for grabbing Eric Garcia’s neck and beating up Gavi. Yamal did not get involved in the post-match melee, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t clock what happened.
At Spain’s World Cup victory parade in Madrid on Monday, July 20, Yamal trolled Argentina and Paredes.
“Yamal, who was earlier pictured smoking a cigar, held up a sign that referenced the brawl at the end of the match, which was triggered by Leandro Paredes, the Argentina midfielder,” The Telegraph relayed. “It read: ‘Velada del Año: Paredes vs Gavi.’ La Velada del Año is a celebrity boxing event in Spain.”
Elsewhere Monday, Gavi downplayed the altercation. He stated that he does not want to see Paredes receive a suspension, per El Partidazo de COPE, and went easier on Paredes than the significant number of people who called for Paredes to be banned.
“It’s not a good image for kids, but there is also this part of football that is more violent,” Gavi said. “The most logical thing would have been to kick him out [of the match], and that’s all.”
BBC Sport’s Dale Johnson and ESPN’s Mark Ogden reported that FIFA has opened a disciplinary investigation.
“Following an assessment of the relevant match reports for the FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, and in line with article 36 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC), the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate potential breaches of the FDC with regard to the post-match incidents,” FIFA said in a written statement, per Ogden.
