In a scathing assessment of FIFA’s governance, La Liga president Javier Tebas has weighed in on Donald Trump’s controversial intervention in Folarin Balogun’s World Cup red card.
The scandal erupted during the World Cup after US forward Folarin Balogun received a red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina, triggering an automatic one-match ban.
Following a direct phone call from US President Donald Trump requesting a review, FIFA’s disciplinary committee took the unprecedented step of suspending Balogun’s ban under a one-year probationary period, clearing him to face Belgium.
This led to pretty much every nation joining forces against the USMNT, with Belgium acting on behalf of everyone when they trolled Trump after the 4-1 win in the Round of 16.
Javier Tebas claims Gianni Infantino got off lightly
As the outspoken head of Spain’s top division, La Liga president Javier Tebas has built a reputation for pulling no punches when confronting global football’s governing bodies.
And this time is no different, with Gianni Infantino the target.
“The suspension of the American player’s ban was absolutely serious. They were lucky that Belgium eliminated the USA, because otherwise a case could have arisen that might have cost Infantino his job,” Tebas said.
“Since Belgium won, they managed to bury the matter. But these things are just the tip of the iceberg.”
