Kings need to give one former Raptor a real chance

As much as the NBA Summer League is about assessing recently drafted rookies, it's also about checking out other additions. That was the case for the Sacramento Kings and Jonathan Mogbo. The former Raptor most certainly earned a main roster spot with his Summer League performance.

Toronto drafted the young power forward in the second round back in 2024. He got good playing time in his first season, leaving a positive impression on the organization and fans. Changes to the roster led to a decline in his usage in season two, so the Raptors declined his team option for 2026-2027.

The Kings saw an opportunity and took it. They are looking for young players with high upside. In particular, they want guys who are strong on defense without sacrificing effectiveness or efficiency on offense. And if that player also happens to be a strong forward, all the better.

That is a great description of Mogbo. This 24-year-old power forward is known for his defensive versatility as well as his relentless rebounding. He's not a major scorer, but he is consistent and delivers well as part of an overall strategy. Plus, Mogbo is a good facilitator for his size.

Kings need to get him on the main roster

Over the course of the Summer League in Las Vegas, Mogbo had a solid run. He played in four out of the five games, only missing the third one as part of time and rotation management. The Kings have a lot of players to get on the court and assess in actual in-game situations.

During the four games Mogbo played in, he collected 46 points, 35 rebounds, 11 assists, two steals, and six blocks. On top of that, he kept both his personal fouls and turnovers to an absolute minimum while maintaining a mostly positive =/- rating. It was a solid performance all around.

The Kings have some decisions to make on what to do with their last couple of main roster spots. Mogbo is currently on a two-year two-way contract with the Kings, but they should strongly consider leveling him up sooner rather than later. He has the right attributes and is a proven fit on the team.

That would also open a two-way spot for another developmental player who has made a Summer League impression, such as Marquel Sutton. Naturally, the Kings don't need to make any decisions right away, though this seems like an easy one. It's a choice that could work out well for Sacramento.
