Katie Boulter’s tears of anguish at Wimbledon turned to tears of joy in Tuscany as she married fellow professional Alex de Minaur in the idyllic surrounds of the Italian countryside.
Boulter and fellow British tennis stars Laura Robson, Heather Watson and Jodie Burrage have posted pictures and videos on Instagram from the newlyweds’ three-day celebration last week.
Boulter uploaded a photo of the happy couple, captioned, “Mr and Mrs de Minaur”, along with a series of other snaps.
Robson, Watson and Burrage also chronicled their time at the five-star Borgo Santo Pietro, an 800-year-old farmhouse and estate.
Boulter suffered a shock-first round defeat to Italian teenager Tyra Caterina Grant at Wimbledon last month, and was overcome with emotion when the subject of her wedding was raised after the match.
Asked if July was still going to be the best month of her life, Boulter replied: “I think this is the most challenging part about tennis. It’s so difficult to feel satisfied. I think it’s something you keep trying to strive for, but yeah…”
She then broke down, before adding: “Yeah, it’s tough. It’s tough. I can assure you it’s going to be the best day of my life in a while. But not today.”
The lavish affair between two of the world’s top tennis players was the second of two ceremonies, the first of which took place on July 12, the same day as the Wimbledon men’s singles final.
Attended by just eight guests, it was held in a Grade II-listed church in Old Woodhouse, Leicestershire, near the village of Woodhouse Eaves where Boulter grew up.
The split celebrations were held so that Boulter’s grandfather, who is living with dementia and is in a care home, could attend and potentially walk her down the aisle.
In the end, he was unable to do so but still gave her away at the altar.
“It was everything I could have dreamed of,” Boulter told Vogue magazine.
De Minaur, who beat Argentina’s Roman Andres Burruchaga on the same Wimbledon court immediately after his fiancee’s defeat, said after his match: “Today was a tough one for Katie. She usually does so incredibly well to put these tough moments behind her, or at least she makes that effort. For me, I was trying to kind of stay in my lane in a way and focus on what I needed to do. It’s not easy by any means because ultimately you want the whole kind of household to keep on winning. She should be proud of her year, though.”
