College basketball play-by-play man and longtime SportsCenter and Baseball Tonight host Karl Ravech is among those being let go by ESPN in its latest round of layoffs, per The Athletic.
ESPN is also making major cuts in its football department following its acquisition of NFL Network. This is the outlet’s third round of layoffs this year.
“Over the past several months, we’ve made significant progress integrating the NFL assets that we acquired into ESPN. Throughout this process, we have taken the time to carefully evaluate our collective teams, resources and organizational structure to best position us for the future. As a result, we had to make some difficult decisions about job impacts that we will be communicating today,” ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro told staff in a memo obtained by Hoops Wire. “While most of the job impacts are tied to the acquisition, we will also notify colleagues in other parts of the company today that their positions have been impacted. We are committed to treating employees with compassion and respect and to providing support as they navigate this transition.”
Ravech had been with the network for 33 years, and while he worked in basketball, he’s mostly known for baseball coverage.
Others reportedly let go in the latest round of cuts, per The Athletic: Former NFL quarterback Cam Newton, longtime SportsCenter anchor David Lloyd, former NFL linebacker Bart Scott, NFL insider Tom Pelissero, NFL Network analyst Charles Davis, and NFL analyst Ryan Clark — reportedly informed Monday during a taping of NFL Live.
Three years ago, NBA analysts Jeff Van Gundy and Mark Jackson were among a surprising round of ESPN layoffs. This time, it doesn’t appear any major NBA names have been impacted.
