Julie Andrews is taking the spotlight in a “definitive” new documentary.
On Wednesday, July 22, Disney announced that a film chronicling the legendary Oscar winner’s life will debut on Disney+ in 2027. An official title for the documentary has not yet been revealed.
The project is helmed by director-producer R.J. Cutler, who was behind 2021’s Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry and 2024’s Martha Stewart doc, Martha.
“Julie Andrews is not simply a beloved performer. She is a cultural touchstone, a figure woven into the fabric of how generations of people understand joy, resilience and grace,” Cutler says in a statement.
“Most people don’t know the extraordinary challenges she’s had to overcome throughout her life, all of which we delve into in this film,” he adds. “To sit with Julie, to be allowed into her inner world, to watch her reflect on a life that has shaped so many other lives was an experience I will forever cherish.”
The filmmaker says Andrews, 90, “gave us her full self, without armor, without pretense.”
“What we found,” he says, “was someone even more extraordinary than the icon. I am humbled by her talent, in awe of her strength and honored by her trust.”
According to a press release, the documentary will feature “rare, never-before-seen archival footage and candid new interviews,” including a sit-down with the beloved actress known for Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music and The Princess Diaries.
The film is described as offering an “intimate and revealing look at Andrews’ extraordinary journey, from her early days in British vaudeville to her meteoric rise as a global superstar. Marked by resilience, heartbreak, reinvention and enduring grace, her story goes far beyond the spotlight.”
The film is produced by This Machine, a part of Sony Pictures Television. Producers include Trevor Smith, Elise Pearlstein, Jane Cha Cutler and Jonathan Ruane, and Mark Blatty serves as an executive producer.
