Theater fans will be reintroduced to the Coachella Valley this fall when a desert-set play returns to Broadway with an especially star-studded cast.

"Other Desert Cities," the Tony Award-winning play by Jon Robin Baitz, will head to the Big Apple with previews beginning Tuesday, Sept. 29. The limited engagement is scheduled to run through Jan. 17, 2027.

Who's in the Other Desert Cities Broadway 2026 cast?
The show will star Emmy Award winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus (in her Broadway debut), Academy Award nominee Ed Harris and Oscar winner Allison Janney, along with "Stranger Things" star Joe Keery and Tony Award nominee actress Lily Rabe. The revival will be directed by Tony Award-winning actor John Benjamin Hickey.
What is Other Desert Cities about?
The show is set during Christmas Eve in the Palm Springs home of a politically connected family. Drama begins to unfold when daughter Polly (Louis-Dreyfus) arrives "with a memoir and the power to expose the explosive truth they’ve kept hidden," according to the show's website. Harris will play Polly's conservative patriarch father Lyman, while Janney will portray Silda, Polly’s alcoholic aunt and unlikely ally. Rabe will play Brooke, Polly’s younger sister, and Keery will play Trip, Brooke’s boyfriend.
"Other Desert Cities" originally premiered Off-Broadway in 2011 before transferring to Broadway later that year. It has been performed at various regional theaters across the country, including at the Coachella Valley Repertory in spring 2025. During its initial Broadway season, the play was nominated for for five Tony Awards, including best play and best actress for Stockard Channing, and Judith Light won for best feature actress in a play. It was also a 2012 finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
Locals will recognize the name of the show from highway signs along Interstate 10 — and at Palm Springs International Airport — leading toward Indio and "Other Desert Cities," such as Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert and beyond.
