Juan Thornhill has a dream of returning. It's unclear whether the Chiefs will usher that forward into a reality.

The longtime Chiefs safety is a free agent these days, and reports about any interest or activity have been nil. Thornhill may be being selective about his opportunities, but for a veteran who ended his season on the practice squad of his second franchise a year ago, it's hard to imagine that's the case. Now, as training camp nears, Thornhill seems to be pleading his case in the public sphere.

On Monday, Thornhill used his TikTok account to express his appreciation for Chiefs Kingdom and to relive some memories of walking out to the cheers at Arrowhead with the caption: "Imagine walking out to the best fans" with hashtags referencing the Chiefs. Who can blame him, given how that scenario must feel for a player on game day?

A few possibilities cloud any deeper understanding of Thornhill's intention with the post. He might be sharing some of his more enjoyable memories with fans while considering retirement. He also could be letting the Chiefs know in a very public way that he would love to return for another season.

For our purposes, the notion that Thornhill is ready for a homecoming is the most intriguing angle here. It also seems to be the most plausible. He was the team's second-round pick out of Virginia Tech in 2019 and was immediately slotted in as a starter in the secondary from his first week in the NFL. From there, he built a body of work that earned him a nice payday from the Cleveland Browns once he hit free agency before the 2023 season.

The Browns signed Thornhill to serve as an experienced and championship-winning starter next to Grant Delpit, but calf injuries limited him to 11 games in each of his first two seasons in Ohio. He was released two seasons into his three-year, $21 million deal and subsequently picked up by the Pittsburgh Steelers early in the new league year for 2025. By early November, he'd been cut again and spent the rest of the season on the Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad.

The coaches and front office personnel who were committed to Thornhill the first time around are mostly still in place, so if any team could convince themselves that there's juice to squeeze there, it would be the Chiefs. But safety was a concern a year ago with the exhibited lack of trust in Jaden Hicks and yet there was no known overture toward Thornhill after his release from both the Browns and the Steelers.

The Chiefs aren't exactly set at safety even now. Alohi Gilman is the new veteran leader, signed to a three-year deal in free agency. Chamarri Conner and Hicks form the rest of the core trio but there's room for someone else to emerge—or for a signing. A training camp flyer might be in the cards for Thornhill, but the lack of action until now (or even all of last season) makes it seem like the interest might be one-sided in this case. A homecoming feels like a long shot for Juan Thornhill.
