Although Cristian Romero had a fantastic 2026 World Cup campaign for Argentina and was one of the standouts of the tournament before facing a rough Final with a potential injury during it, there is not much love between the Tottenham Hotspur faithful and the star center back.
Some former figures at the club like ex managers Tim Sherwood and Antonio Conte want to see Spurs potentially keep Romero around because of his quality, but there's a reason why Spurs supporters usually disagree with these two former coaches.
Romero let Tottenham down at the end of the season in 2025/26 with a lack of leadership on and off the pitch, and after he pined for a La Liga transfer already last summer, it is clearly time for the Argentinian international to leave the Premier League.
Cristian Romero might not be worth that much
Tottenham Hotspur fans are optimistic that they can get a big fee for Cristian Romero after he starred on the world stage for Argentina again, but not everyone thinks that the crazy figures of 60 million pounds and above are going to be realistic here.
Speaking on the Last Word on Spurs show, PA Sport journalist George Sessions stated that Tottenham will likely only get 40 million pounds back for selling Romero this summer, which is about half of what Tottenham fans were hoping to get.
Now, what Tottenham fans wanted sounded unrealistic, because even though Romero is a top player, he is 28 years of age now and has no real resale value. So he is not, in fact, going to cost 80 million pounds or close to Mateus Fernandes, a young defensive midfielder not even close to his prime, for example.
Tottenham may just have to take what they can get with Cuti, because the main clubs that want him don't have a whole lot of money to spend. Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, and Inter Milan are the three big clubs with the most interested in Cuti, but they can't spend all that much more than the 40 million pounds Atleti were offering for him last season anyway.
And though Romero had a great World Cup, the Premier League is more indicative of his quality, and he was pretty lousy for the full 2025/26 season for Spurs. So from the perspective of a top La Liga club looking to win the title, Romero does not move the needle more than 40 million pounds, brutal as it is for Spurs fans to hear.
