Journalism has rejoined the NTRA Top 10 after a troubled, last-to-first victory in the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap at Del Mar on July 18.
Trained by Michael McCarthy, the 4-year-old son of Curlin reunited with jockey Umberto Rispoli for the 1 1/16-mile opening weekend feature at Del Mar. Journalism was fractious in the gate and missed the break by several lengths, but that didn’t stop him from running down his foes in the stretch for a three-quarters-of-a-length victory.
It was his third start of 2026. In his season debut, he was third behind No. 7 White Abarrio and No. 5 Sovereignty in the G2 Oaklawn Handicap in April. Prior to the San Diego, he was third again in the G1 Met Mile, won by No. 2 Nysos.
Journalism moves into the 10th spot after being ranked 15th last week. He is owned in partnership by Bridlewood Farm, Don Alberto Stable, Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Elayne Stables 5, LLC, Robert V. LaPenta, Mrs. John Magnier-Lessee, Derrick Smith-Lessee and Michael B. Tabor-Lessee.
Winchell Thoroughbreds’ Magnitude continues to lead the poll with 26 of 28 first-place votes.
Trained by Steve Asmussen, the 4-year-old son of Not This Time is undefeated in three appearances this year. He began his campaign with a 3 ¾-length victory in the Grade 3 Razorback Handicap at Oaklawn after an illness took him out of G1 Saudi Cup contention. Magnitude recovered in time to defeat No. 4 Forever Young in the G1 Dubai World Cup in March, then secured a globe-trotting G1 double in the G1 Stephen Foster at Churchill Downs in late June.
Nysos is ranked second with one first-place vote. The Bob Baffert trainee won the G1 Met Mile by four lengths after beginning his campaign with a runner-up finish in the Saudi Cup.
The 5-year-old son of Nyquist is co-owned by Baoma Corp, Mrs. John Magnier, Michael B. Tabor, and Derrick Smith.
Forever Young edged dual classic winner Golden Tempo by one point to take over the third spot. The Japan-bred 5-year-old has made two starts this year, winning the Saudi Cup in February and finishing second in the Dubai World Cup in March. He is unraced since, but is reportedly pointing to the G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park on Sept. 18.
Forever Young is trained by Yoshito Yahagi for owner Susumu Fujita.
Whitham Thoroughbreds’ homebred Burnham Square is ranked 12th with the final first-place vote. The Ian Wilkes trainee is on a three-race winning streak led by the G2 Elkhorn Stakes and the G3 Louisville Stakes.
