Josh Heupel didn’t waste any time going after Lane Kiffin at SEC Media Days. Kiffin, who now coaches at LSU after leaving Ole Miss, will pay a visit to Knoxville this season.
Well, that’s another one of Kiffin’s former schools. Heupel simply hoped that Kiffin would be ready for whatever comes his way when he returns to Tennessee.

“I certainly hope our fan base hasn’t cooled off,” Heupel said Monday at SEC Media Days. “So you know, whether it’s the grocery stores being fully stocked with mustard or you know our sports stores making sure that they got reinforcements on on the golf balls, hopefully, Knoxville’s ready for his arrival.”
Michael Cauble of WBRZ 2 Sports, who tweeted the video, followed up with another tweet after speaking with Heupel.
“I caught up with Josh Heupel after this, he was just having fun with Lane, says there’s no beef there,” Cauble wrote. “Thanks for the sizzle either way!
If you’re trying to recall what Heupel was talking about, well, Kiffin had golf balls and mustard thrown at him back in 2021. That was Kiffin’s, then at Ole Miss, first return to Tennessee since his departure from the Volunteers following the 2009 season when he accepted the USC job.

Funny enough, Josh Heupel’s claim about Tennessee fans getting ready for Lane Kiffin won’t even be the biggest revenge storyline this season it seems. ESPN’s Paul Finebaum said the 2021 incident will look like a happy accident, essentially, compared to when Kiffin and LSU have to go to Ole Miss in Week 3.
“One day, I will solve the riddle of which fan base hates Lane Kiffin more – Tennessee for 2009 or this?” Finebaum said on ESPN’s SEC football schedule release show. “And I think we’re going to find out this day. When Kiffin went back to Tennessee a couple years ago, they threw golf balls and mustard at him. That will be Kindergarten stuff compared to this.”
ESPN previously announced LSU vs. Ole Miss will air at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC as part of the Week 3 slate. The expectation is ESPN’s College GameDay will also be in attendance as Kiffin makes his first trip back to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium since leaving the Rebels after the 2025 regular season.
